Weapon Types
Fallout 76 features a large number of different weapons types. We have detailed all of them below.
Energy Weapons
Energy weapons are weapons that fire lasers, fire or ice at your enemies. They have good damage stats and can take down a multitude of enemies esily. They also come with special damage stats such as ice can freeze enemies while fire can set enemies on fire.
You can choose certain Perk Cards for Energy Weapons to further increase their combat effectiveness. We recommend that you pick Science (INT) Series of Perk Cards which will allow you to craft energy guns and their mods with reduced prices. Another good Perk Card is Batteries Included (STR). It will reduce the weight of Energy Gun Ammo.

Explosive Weapons
Explosive weapons serve one purpose in Fallout 76, to explode your enemies into many pieces. These weapons will ensure that few of your enemies are there for the next round. You can make the explosive weapons even more effective by picking up some related Perk Cards.

Exotic Weapons
Exotic Weapons include some of the really strange and unique weapons found in Fallout 76. This is Exotic Weapons (INT) which allows you to craft Exotic Weapons and reduce their crafting costs.

Heavy Guns
Heavy Guns deal massive damage to enemies but most of them are slow or they make you slow while using them. You will need to equip certain SPECIAL points, Perk Cards and carrying capacity items to make them better in combat. Some of these Heavy Guns also suffer from accuracy but if they do manage to hit the enemies, they will deal huge amounts of damage to them.
You can use different Perk Cards to make these guns even better. Start with choosing Lock and Load (STR) which will increase the reloading speed for all Heavy Guns that you use. One Gun Army (LCK) will give you a chance to stagger your enemies and cripple their limbs with bullets slowing them down. Stabilized (INT) is also a useful Perk Card which will increase your accuracy and ignore some of enemy armor if you are using a Power Armor.
Another useful Perk Card to use with Heavy Guns is the Bear Arms (STR), using Bear Arms will reduce the weight of all the Heavy Guns by a great amount. Bullet Shield (STR) will increase your damage resistance while you are using a Heavy Gun. Heavy Gunner (STR) Perk Card will increase the damage of any non-explosive heavy gun in your use. You can also pick between Perk Card which increase the damage of explosive Heavy Guns.
With Heavy Guns, your main attribute will be Strength and you will need enough Strength to even properly wield a Heavy Gun. If you prefer using Heavy Guns then you need to make sure that keep increasing your Strength every time possible. Picking up Perk Cards relating to Power Armor also benefit Heavy Guns.

Pipe Guns
Pipe Guns can also be considered as Pistols and they use the same benefits and bonuses from Perk Card mentioned in the ‘Pistols’ section of this guide. There is one specific Perk Card exclusively for Pipe Guns which is Licensed Plumber (INT). It will reduce the speed of Pipe Guns degradation and also make them cheaper to repair.

Pistols
Fallout 76 features a large number of automatic and non-automatic pistols. You will be using pistols a lot in the game so it is better than you use some Perk Cards that make them better in the game. Pistols also come with a lot of mods. Coming to Perk Cards, Crackshot (PER) will increase the range and accuracy of pistols when you aim down the sight with them.
Modern Renegade (AGI) will increase firing speed while firing from hip and will give you a chance to cripple enemies with a single hit. Packin’s Light (STR) will reduce the weight of all the pistols so that you can carry more pistols with you. We have detailed all Automatic and Non-Automatic Pistols in Fallout 76 below.
Automatic Pistols
Automatic Pistols have increased fire rate and greater ammo capacity. These are good for fighting enemies at close range. You can make any pistol automatic by using the Automatic Receiver Mod on it if the pistol allows this mod. Also using Guerrila (AGI) Perk Card will allow increased damage with Automatic Pistols.

Rifles
Rifles are also one of the most commonly used weapons in the game. Any weapon that can have a Stock mod applied to it is considered a rifle. You can even convert some pistols to a rifle with the help of a Stock mod. If you are unable to find a rifle but have some good pistols lying around, use a Stock mod on them to convert them to a rifle.
When a pistol is converted into a rifle, that pistol will also get all Perk Card bonuses specified for rifles since it is considered a rifle after conversion. Coming to Perks, Long Shot (OER) will increase your range and accuracy while you are aiming with your sights. Tank Killer (PER) allow increased bullet penetration.
Tormenter (LCK) will increase the chances of your crippling your enemies with a single shot. Just like pistol, Rifles are automatic and non-automatic. We have detailed both of these categories below.
Automatic Rifles
There are no automatic rifles in Fallout 76. The only way to obtain automatic rifles in Fallout 76 is by applying an Automatic Receiver mod to non-automatic rifles. So if you have a pistol, you can put a Stock mod on it to convert it into a rifle and then apply an Automatic Receiver mod to convert it into a fully-fledged automatic rifle.
Automatic Rifles have one perk which is useful for them and it is Commando (PER). It will increase the damage you deal with all automatic rifles in the game.
Non-Automatic Rifles
Nearly every rifle in Fallout 76 is a non-automatic rifle. You can use Rifleman (PER) Perk Card with these to increase the damage dealt with non-automatic rifles. Tormentor, Long Shot (PER) and Tank Killer (PER) work best with these rifles. We have detailed them below.

Shotguns
The best weapons for close range encounters are shotguns. However, apart from the initial punch, they suffer from long reload times, huge weapon spread, low firing speed and small ammo capacity clips. The Perk Cards most suitable to use with Shotguns are Enforcer (AGI) which increases the chance of staggering enemies with your hits.
Scattershot (STR) lowers the total weight of your shotguns and reload speeds. Shotgunner (STR) increases the damage dealt with shotguns while Skeet Shooter (PER) increases the weapon accuracy and reduces the bullet spread of the weapon. Following shotguns are present in the game.

Special Weapons
You can only get these special weapons as quest rewards or completing other certain tasks in Fallout 76. They might look like other weapons but they are actually special variants that come with special modifications done to them. All Rise
It is a Two-Handed Melee weapon. It is obtained as a reward for completing Side Quest: Mayor for a Day.
Ancient Blade
It is a One-Handed Melee weapon. It is obtained as part of Event: Breach and Clear.
Anti-Scorched Training Pistol
It is a 10 mm Automatic Pistol. It grants +25% damage to Scorched, –20% damage to every other enemy. It is given to you before entering the Belching Betty mine during Main Quest: Into the Fire.
Black Diamond
It is a One-Handed Melee weapon. It is obtained as a reward for completing Main Quest: Flavors of Mayhem.
Blade of Bastet
It is a One-Handed Melee weapon. It offers increased armor penetration. It is obtained as a reward for completing Mistress of Mystery Quest: Forging a Legend. Armor penetration is increased when wearing the Eye of Ra.
Bunker Buster
It is a Heavy Gun with Explosive damage. It is obtained as a reward for completing Main Quest: One of Us.
Camden Whacker
It is a One-Handed Melee weapon. It is Purchased with Fuzzy Tokens at the Camden Park prize shop in the Ash Heap
Daisy Cutter
It is Heavy Gun with Explosive damage. It is rewarded for completing Side Quest: An Organic Panic.
The Dragon
It is an Exotic Non-Automatic Rifle. It grants increased chance to cripple and extra limb damage.
Dross
It is a Thrown Weapon. It is only usable during Daily Quest: Mistaken Identity as part of the Dross Toss minigame.
Grant’s Saber
It is a One-Handed Melee weapon. It is obtained as part of Mistress of Mystery: Forging a Legend.
Meteoric Sword
It is a One-Handed Melee weapon. It offers +10% damage vs. Humans, 90% reduced weight and 50% more durability. It is obtained as potential award from Event: Lode Baring
Nailer
It is a One-Handed Melee weapon. It does more damage the lower your health is. It is obtained as a reward for completing Event: One Violent Night.
Paddle Ball
It is an Exotic Weapon. It is obtained by trading in Mr. Fuzzy Tokens in Camden Park.
Pumpkin Grenades
It is a Grenade and with it, the target takes additional damage and radiation for 5s. It is obtained by completing Daily Quest: Trick or Treat.
Pyrolyzer
It is a Heavy Gun with Energy damage. It reduces your target’s damage output by 20% for 3s. it is obtained by completing Side Quest: Tracking Unknowns.
Rose’s Syringer
It is an Exotic Pipe Gun. It is obtained as part of Main Quest: Flavors of Mayhem.
Somerset Special
It is a Non-Automatic Pistol. It is obtained as a reward for completing Event: Back on the Beat.
Voice of Set
It is a Non-Automatic Pistol. It deals additional electric damage to robots. It is obtained as a reward for completing Mistress of Mystery Quest: Prototypical Problems. It does additional damage and has a chance to stun robots when wearing the Eye of Ra.
Vox Syringer
It is an Exotic Pipe Gun. It can make the target “speak”. It is found in Monongah as the start of Daily Quest: Someone To Talk To.
Melee Weapons
Along with automatic and non-automatic weapons in the game, you will also find tons of melee weapons that will save your life when you run out of ammo. You can also equip some Perk Cards to make these melee weapons more effective. We recommend that you always keep a melee weapon or two handy because you will often run out of ammo in Fallout 76.
Choosing the Incisor (STR) Perk Card will increase the armor penetration by up to 75% of all melee weapons. Makeshift Warrior (INT) Perk Card will decrease the melee weapon degradation rate and will also make them cheaper to fix. Choosing Martial Artists (STR) will allow you to lower the total weight of your melee weapons.
Another Perk Card Overly Generous (CHR) will increase your radioactive damage while using melee attacks if you are under Radiations influence. There are different types of one-handed, two-handed and punching weapons available in the game. Pick between Gladiator (STR), Iron Fist (STR) and Slugger (STR) to increase damage dealt by melee weapons.
One-Handed Melee Weapons
These weapons are equipped in one-hand and are much quicker in combat. Although they lack in damage as that of Two-Handed weapons. These weapons also work great in stealth combat. Fallout 76 has the following One-Handed weapons.

Grenades and Thrown Weapons
There are different types of Grenades and thrown weapons in Fallout 76 as well. You can use grenades to flush out hiding enemies or take out groups of them out quickly. Thrown weapons are excellent for stealth kills while grenades are best for crowd control and flushing out enemies.

Mines and Traps
Mines are excellent for taking out enemies surprisingly. You can throw mines around an area and then lure the enemies in to make the mines explode. They are a good option to protect your C.A.M.P. and workshops as well. If enemies are running behind you and you are unable to get a shot on them, throw a mine behind you to damage them or possibly take them out.
Similar to other offensive weapons in Fallout 76, some Perk Cards can also help you to make mines more effective. Most of the Perk Cards explained above in the Explosive Weapons section will also work with mines. Apart from those, use Home Defense Perk Card (AGI) will allows you to craft and disarm more traps.

Understanding Damage Types
There are different types of damage that you can inflict to you enemies using all the above weapons in Fallout 76. It is important that you know the difference between each type of damage that a weapon does so that you can use them accordingly.
Some enemy types will be stronger against certain types of damage while they will be weaker to another type of damage. So it is vital that you use the weapons that inflict the most effective damage against each enemy so that you can kill them easily.
Ballistic
This is the most common type of damage and nearly most of the weapons in Fallout 76 will deal ballistic damage to enemies. Most of the enemies will be prone to ballistic damage but if you encounter an enemy that is resistant to ballistic, switch to a weapon that deals Energy or Radiation damage. Ballistic damage weapons should be in your inventory always.
Energy Damage
Weapons that use laser, fire or ice deal energy damage to enemies. Each weapon in this category deals a totally unique damage to enemies and they are not related to each other in any way. Fire weapons will cause burn to enemies, ice will cause freeze to enemies while lasers will cut down your enemies into pieces.
Radiation
This type of damage will cause radiation damage to enemies and they will suffer from radiations. Enemies suffering from radiations have low HP and they will continue to deal damage as you continue to attack with a radiation weapon.
Poison
Poison weapons inflict poisoning on enemies. Poisoned enemies take damage overtime. The enemy keeps getting damaged until the poison wears off. This damage is inflicted even if you do not hit the enemy. This works great against enemies who are tough to take down in a head on conflict.
Explosive
Explosive damage is the most powerful damage in Fallout 76. You can use mines, grenades and other explosive weapons in the game to literally blast your enemies into pieces. No other weapon in the game deals as much damage as the explosive weapons deal damage.
If you are looking to protect yourself from explosive damage, then nothing works good apart from a good body armor. If you are lightly armored and you catch a grenade between your feet, your time in the wastelands will come to an end.
Legendary Weapon Effects
Managing to defeat a very strong enemy in the game will often give you a Legendary item. These weapons or armor pieces will come with legendary effects which will really make your game easy. These are weapons or armor pieces with special modifiers which can be of great help. We have detailed all of such Legendary Weapons Effects below.
- Anti-Scorched – 25% more damage against Scorched, 20% less against everything else.
- Anti-Armor – Ignores 50% of your target’s armor.
- Assassin’s – +10% damage to players.
- Berserker’s – Deal more damage the lower your Damage Resistance.
- Bloodied – Does more damage the lower your health.
- Concussive – +33% VATS hit chance
- Executioner’s – +50% more damage when your target is below 40% health.
- Explosive – Bullets explode for 15 area damage.
- Exterminator’s – Does 50% more damage against Mirelurks and bugs.
- Furious – Damage increased after each consecutive hit on the same target.
- Ghoul Slayer’s – Does 50% more damage against Ghouls.
- Hunter’s – Does 50% more damage against animals.
- Instigating – Does double damage if the target is at full health.
- Junkie’s – Deal more damage the more chem withdrawal effects you currently have.
- Medic’s – V.A.T.S. crits will heal you and your group.
- Mutant’s – Damage increased by 10% if you are mutated.
- Mutant Slayer’s – +30% damage to Super Mutants.
- Never Ending – Unlimited ammo capacity.
- Nocturnal – Does increasing amounts of damage as the night grows longer, but less damage during the day.
- Stalker’s – If not in combat, +100% V.A.T.S. accuracy at +50% AP cost.
- Suppressor’s – Reduce your target’s damage output by 20% for 3 seconds.
- Troubleshooter’s – +30% damage to robots
- Two Shot – Shoots an additional projectile.
- Zealot’s – +30% damage to Ghouls

Fallout 76’s next update is scheduled to release in a week, and with it will come balance changes for both heavy weapons and energy weapons.
Bethesda previewed its plans for Patch 7 in its latest Inside the Vault post where it outlined those balance adjustments, a special event, and more. The goal of the changes, according to Bethesda is to make both types of weapons more durable while also buffing them to allow players to tear through enemies quicker.
“In Patch 7, we’re making some adjustments to greatly increase the durability of many energy and heavy weapons and increasing their damage so you can take down enemies more easily, spend less time repairing, and more time looting,” Bethesda said.
Beginning with the energy weapons, Bethesda said it plans on making both the heavy and semi-auto weapons more durable so that they don’t need repairs as quickly when firing off energy rounds. Some weapons are also getting a damage boost as outlined in the notes below:

- For heavy and semi-auto energy weapons, we’ve greatly reduced the amount of condition damage they take per shot. Your heavy energy weapons should now last four to five times longer, and semi-auto energy weapons should last twice as long before needing repairs.
- We’ve also given semi-auto energy weapons an additional damage boost of +10% so they have a little more bite.
Heavy weapons are getting a similar damage buff, though heavy weapons with high fire rates will sacrifice some of that rate of fire to get the damage increase. Other heavy weapons will get a straight-up buff, and automatic heavy weapons will withstand more of a beating before requiring repairs.

- We’ve reduced the fire-rate for high rate-of-fire automatic heavy weapons across the board and increased their damage by +10%. Adjusting these weapons’ fire-rates gave us more room for a damage increase, which will help them punch through armor more effectively without increasing their baseline damage per second too high.
- Weapon damage for all other automatic heavy weapons has been increased by 10% to 20%.
- Like energy weapons above, we’ve significantly reduced the condition damage that automatic ballistic heavy weapons take per shot, and they should now last about four times longer before they need to visit a weapons workbench.
Full patch notes for everything that’s included in the update will be released on the day the patch is released, Bethesda said.
