Income

Food and Water

Characters who don't eat or drink suffer the effects of exhaustion (see appendix PH-A). Exhaustion caused by lack of food or water can't be removed until the character eats and drinks the full required amount.

Food

A character needs one pound of food per day and can make food last longer by subsisting on half rations. Eating half a pound of food in a day counts as half a day without food.

A character can go without food for a number of days equal to 3 + his or her Constitution modifier (minimum 1). At the end of each day beyond that limit, a character automatically suffers one level of exhaustion.

Dnd 5e Dmg

A normal day of eating resets the count of days without food to zero.

Water

A character needs one gallon of water per day, or two gallons per day if the weather is hot. A character who drinks only half that much water must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion at the end of the day. A character with access to even less water automatically suffers one level of exhaustion at the end of the day.

If the character already has one or more levels of exhaustion, the character takes two levels in either case.

Dmg 5e Income Per Day Calculator

D&D balance is based on 6-8 encounters per DAY? Is XP to blame.
DM Basic rules p.57 The Adventuring Day says 'Assuming typical adventuring conditions and average luck, most adventuring parties can handle about six to eight medium or hard encounters in a day. If the adventure has more easy encounters, the adventurers can get through more. If it has more deadly encounters, they can handle fewer.'
I'm not sure if there was even a number for pre-4e D&D, but I never followed it.
Personally, as a DM, I have never run any adventure RAW. If there is a dungeon with 50 rooms and 5 levels I just reworked it as a 'believable' 5 or 6 room 1st level and a boss fight 2nd level. The DM goes through the grind as well as the players.
So if everything is set up to run a 6-8 encounter day, what does that do to the PC's hit points, healing dice, spells, etc. If I run 5e with 1 or 2 encounters per day, will the PCs run right over them? Should they be squishier? Or just make them all hard encounters?
I don't want to give out XP, just level them up after a milestone (usually a session or two). That seems to be the crux of the problem. The way the RAW are, XP is the prize.
PC's might act very different if they don't have to kill every last kobold baby for XP. I would rather have one or two meaningful encounters than filler.
Hope I came across clear on my gripe, I've been sudsy and have to go to work in a few hours. I'll dial in Friday. Oh, and I haven't played 5e yet.
